New Delhi, January 19 (IANS). Mumbai Police has expressed suspicion that the accused who attacked Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan is a Bangladeshi. His name is Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad who according to the police had come to the actor’s house to commit theft. DCP Dixit Gedam gave this information in the press conference.
DCP Zone 9 Dixit Gedam, while addressing media persons, said that actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked at his residence at 2 am on January 16. FIR was registered and one accused has been arrested. His name is Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad, his age is 30 years.
According to the DCP, the accused had entered Saif Ali Khan’s house with the intention of theft. He will be produced in the court and custody will be sought. We suspect that he is of Bangladeshi origin, but we are currently investigating. The primary evidence that he is a Bangladeshi is that he does not have Indian documents. We suspect that the accused is of Bangladeshi origin and hence sections related to the Passport Act have been added to the case. He will be produced in the court today and police custody will be demanded.
DCP Dixit Gedam further said, “Prima facie the accused is Bangladeshi and after entering India illegally he changed his name. He was using his present name Vijay Das. He had come to Mumbai 5-6 months ago He stayed here for a few days and then worked in a housekeeping agency in Mumbai.
Let us tell you, a person was arrested from Thane early on Sunday for allegedly attacking actor Saif Ali Khan. Police have so far interrogated more than 50 people. 35 teams were deployed to nab the accused.
Actor Saif Ali Khan was injured at the hands of an attacker who entered his house late on January 16. He himself reached Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai in an auto, where his surgery was performed.
