Maharashtra Minister and Mumbai BJP President Ashish Shelar said on Saturday that violence in Murshidabad, West Bengal is an insult to the constitution in protest against the Waqf Amendment Act. He was speaking in a sit -in demonstration organized by the BJP’s Bengali cell outside the state headquarters of the party.
He said, “If the Waqf Act implemented within the scope of constitution and democratic values is being opposed, it should be challenged in a democratic manner through courts. But to protest against the law, to incite religious violence and kill Hindus is a direct insult to the Constitution.”
He questioned, “The BJP stands firmly against the cruel atrocities on Hindus under Mamta Sarkar. They say that there is no religion of terrorism, but why is it that every terrorist attack only involved people of one religion.” Shelar alleged that the “politics of appeasement” of the Mamata Banerjee government has strengthened extremist forces, resulting in atrocities against Hindus. He said that President’s rule should be imposed in West Bengal.
On 11-12 April, three people were killed during violence and large-scale arson in Shamsherganj, Sati, Dhulian and Jangipur areas of Murssherganj, Suti, Dhulian and Jangipur. Shelar said without naming NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar that some leaders try to create caste -based partitions immediately when Hindu unity appears.
Shelar, while giving a clear reference to Pawar’s reply to the questions asked about the terrorists targeting Hindus in the Pahalgam attack on 22 April, said, “Unfortunately, some senior leaders of Maharashtra are also involved in it.” Pawar had said, “I don’t know what the real truth is … women were not harmed, but men were killed.” Shelar reiterated that the Narendra Modi government will take strict action against the people involved in the Pahalgam attack. The meeting kept a two -minute silence in honor of those killed in the Pahalgam attack and the violence in Murshidabad.
