New Delhi, September 20 (IANS). School students across the country will now be able to study about ‘National War Memorial’. Textbooks on ‘National War Memorial’ have been included in the students’ textbooks. Along with this, a chapter on ‘Veer Abdul Hamid’ has been included in school books.
According to the Defence Ministry, a poem on ‘National War Memorial’ and a chapter on ‘Veer Abdul Hameed’ have been included in the NCERT syllabus for Class VI.
Abdul Hamid was a soldier of 4 Grenadiers (CQMH) of the Indian Army. He was martyred while displaying great bravery in the battle fought in Asal Uttar of Khemkaran sector during the Indo-Pak war of 1965. For this, he was posthumously awarded India’s highest military award ‘Paramveer Chakra’.
Before being martyred, Paramveer Abdul Hamid had destroyed Pakistan’s Patton tanks with his gun mounted jeep.
These courses have now been developed in line with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework 2023 for School Education.
The Ministry of Defence says that the poem ‘Rashtriya Yudh Smarak’ and the chapter titled ‘Veer Abdul Hamid’ have been included in the NCERT syllabus of Class VI from this year. This is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Education.
Its objective is to develop the values of patriotism, dedication to duty, courage and sacrifice among school children. Along with this, its objective is also to promote the participation of youth in nation building.
The poem appreciates the spirit behind the ‘National War Memorial’. The chapter titled ‘Veer Abdul Hamid’ honours Veer Abdul Hamid, who made the supreme sacrifice while fighting for the country during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965.
It is worth noting that PM Narendra Modi dedicated the ‘National War Memorial’ to the nation on 25 February 2019 at the iconic Central Vista ‘C’ Hexagon, India Gate, New Delhi. The National War Memorial was established to instill high moral values, sacrifice, national spirit and a sense of belonging in every citizen and to pay a fitting tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives to protect the nation.
The Ministry of Defence has collaborated with the Ministry of Education and NCERT to include the National War Memorial and related material in the school curriculum.
