London, Sep 7 (IANS) A new national memorial to Queen Elizabeth II will be built in London’s St James’s Park, the British government has announced.
The memorial will be built near the Mall at Marlborough Gate, the government said in a statement. It will include surrounding land and a path leading to the lake, including the Blue Bridge. The site was chosen because of its proximity to important historical sites, including Buckingham Palace and the Commonwealth Headquarters, and is also personally associated with the late Queen.
The memorial to his parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, is located near Ceremony Road on the Mall. Establishing a memorial to Elizabeth II near it reflects constitutional and historical importance. Let us tell you that in 2023, a committee formed by the UK government and the royal family selected the location after consultation with the public, key stakeholders and experts from the four countries of the UK.
The statement said the government will support the project and plans to fund additional memorials in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The memorial is intended to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. It is intended to be of significant scale to reflect her lasting impact on national and global life.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the memorial would provide the public with an opportunity to “honor the late Queen and connect with our shared history.” “Queen Elizabeth II’s enduring legacy of service and devotion to our country will never be forgotten,” he said.
Pat McFadden, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, stressed the importance of commemorating the longest-reigning British monarch in a place that reflects her role at the heart of British society.
It is noteworthy that the design phase for the memorial will begin later this year, inviting proposals from architects and designers. The final design will be unveiled in 2026 on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth’s 100th birthday.
The memorial continues Britain’s tradition of honouring its monarchs through permanent landmarks such as the Victoria Memorial and the Royal Albert Hall.
