Political mercury has started climbing before the 2026 assembly elections in West Bengal. A case has come to light from the Kakdwip assembly constituency that has further intensified the conflict between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In fact, Newton Das, who is associated with the 2024 student movement in Bangladesh, has been found in India’s voter list. There has been a stir in the political corridors after this matter came to light.
How in Bangladeshi student voter list?
According to media reports, a person named Newton Das, who has been associated with a student movement in Bangladesh, has been named in the Voter List of West Bengal. The question has started to arise whether intruders can easily join India’s political system? The opposition party BJP has targeted the TMC government over this incident, while the TMC has put the central government and BSF in the dock in response.
TMC retaliation: ‘BSF failure’
Reacting to the issue, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said, “There is no dispute in this. If something is wrong then the administration will take appropriate action by investigating. But the real question is how these people enter India from Bangladesh? This is the work of BSF which comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs. When Myanmar and Bangladeshi infiltrators are caught from BJP -ruled states like Tripura?” Ghosh directly questioned the responsibility of the central government and said that if the infiltration is being done, then the state government, but the BSF and Ministry of Home Affairs are responsible for it.
Amit Shah’s retaliation: ‘BJP government will be formed in 2026’
Along with this issue, the BJP also targeted the Mamta government on the law and order of Bengal. Addressing a Vijay Sankalp worker conference in Kolkata on 1 June, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said: “BJP workers were killed during elections in Bengal and after winning elections. Violence has stopped during elections in the rest of the country, but it continues in Bengal. Shah also said that the time of Mamata Banerjee’s government is over and now the people have made up their mind to change.
TMC claims: Will win again in 2026
Reversing this statement, Kunal Ghosh said that the BJP is repeatedly putting only one rote, but the truth is that the public will reject them and will deny them even further. “In 2021, the BJP made more than 200 statements, but it got only 77 seats. Now it has come down to about 60. TMC has won every Zilla Parishad in the panchayat elections. In 2026 we will win at least 250 seats and Mamta Banerjee will become the Chief Minister for the fourth time.”
Infiltration versus administrative failure
The basic issue of this entire controversy is whether infiltration is an administrative failure or political weapon? The BJP is describing it as the negligence of the Bengal government, while TMC is blaming it at the Center and BSF. Even before this, there have been reports of Bengal-limit dispute, BSF jurisdiction and conflict between the state government.
