Jammu, December 15 (IANS). The Central Government will present two important bills related to ‘One Country-One Election’ in the Lok Sabha on 16 December. These bills are the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will introduce both the bills in the lower house. Jammu and Kashmir CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami has called this bill a threat to the unity of the country.
Tarigami told IANS, “As far as the Government of India is trying to get it passed, this bill is against the Indian constitutional structure. Both thinking about it and doing it are against the Constitution. When the country got independence, there was a mandate to make the Constitution. The people who took part in the freedom struggle made the Constitution. The basic structure of the Constitution is federal. Though our country is one, we have different cultures. , People speaking different dialects are the fundamental basis of this. I would say that diversity of the country will end. It is a fundamental need of democracy. It is also an important element of our unity. This law will harm it.”
He said, “As far as the states are concerned, they have the constitutional freedom to handle their own affairs. The experience till date in our country has shown that our country is made up of North, South, East and West. There are different languages. Because of the different things in the country, it is not good for the unity of our country to make it the same. It is not good either. With the advent of ‘One Nation-One Election’, people fought on their local issues and not on Delhi’s issues. That’s right, absolutely wrong.”
