Protests against the Waqf Act took place on Friday in many parts of West Bengal. During this time the protesters set fire to vehicles. Road and rail traffic were also disrupted. Around 10 policemen were injured while trying to control the crowd. However, according to the police, the situation is currently under control. BJP state president Sukant Majumdar has launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over violence. The Bengal Police wrote in a post on X that the situation is now under control in Sati and Samseerganj areas of Jangipur. The uncontrolled mob has been dispersed by effective police action. At the same time, traffic on the national highway has become normal.

Strict action against those who commit violence

Police said strict action would be taken against those who commit violence. Raids are being conducted to arrest the miscreants. Legal action will also be taken against those who try to spread misinformation and spread rumors. He appealed to the public not to pay attention to rumors and to maintain peace.

Demonstration against Waqf law

Police officials said the protests in Sati in Murshidabad district became violent when people of the Muslim community gathered after Friday prayers and protested against the Waqf Act. He blocked a part of National Highway-12 from Dakbangla Mor to Sutir Sajur Mor in Shamsherganj. The protesters threw stones at the security personnel and set the police vans and public buses on fire.

10 policemen injured in violence

He said the protests became violent when the protesters pelted stones at the police van. This was followed by a clash between the police and the protesters, in which about 10 policemen were injured. The official said some protesters attacked the policemen, after which the police lathi-charged to bring the uncontrolled mob under control and later fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

Protesters staged a sit -in on railway tracks

Another official said that amidst the violence, some policemen had to take shelter in the nearby mosque. At the same time, the district administration has requested the intervention from the Border Security Force (BSF) to restore the general situation. According to officials, the protesters staged a sit -in on railway tracks in Malda, affecting the movement of trains. He said that train services were also affected on the Farakka-Azimganj section of Eastern Railway. Meanwhile, Governor CV Anand Bose has asked the state government to take immediate and effective action against those responsible for disturbances in sensitive areas.

Rail traffic affected due to violence

Train services between Dhulianganga and Nimetita railway stations were disrupted due to violence. Indian Railways said that the rail service has been disrupted on the New Farakka-Azimganj rail section. The protesters captured railway tracks. These people sat near LC Gate No. 42 and 43. After which Azimganj-Bhagalpur Passenger (53029) and Katwa-Azimganj Passenger (53435) trains were canceled. At the same time, the route of five trains was changed. These include Balurghat-Nazweep Dham Express (13432), Kamakhya-Puri Express (15644), Sealdah-Nu Alipurdar Teesta Torsa Express (13141), Kolkata-Sildhar Special (05640) and Howrah-Malda Town Intercity (13465).

What did the governor say?

Regarding the violence in Murshidabad, Governor Dr. CV Anand Bose said that we already feared that something could be wrong. Therefore, this information had already been shared with the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO). We are constantly monitoring the situation. The police have also been instructed to control the situation. No violence will be tolerated in the name of protest.
