New Delhi, September 9 (IANS). The Paris Paralympics was quite historic for India. The country’s para-athletes won a total of 29 medals. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the athletes.
The Prime Minister praised the dedication and indomitable courage of the para-athletes towards the sport on the social media platform X.
He wrote, “Para Olympics 2024 has been special and historic. India is overjoyed that our incredible para-athletes have won 29 medals, the best ever performance since India’s debut in the Games.
“This achievement is due to the unwavering dedication and indomitable courage of our athletes. Their sporting performances have given us many moments to remember and inspired many upcoming athletes.”
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games concluded on Sunday evening with a closing ceremony at the Stade de France attended by around 64,000 spectators and more than 8,500 athletes and their staff.
After 11 days of competition, Indian para-athletes won 7 gold, 9 silver and 13 bronze medals at the Paris Paralympics. India’s first medal at the Paralympics came in the 1972 Games, with Murlikant Petkar winning gold in swimming.
Prior to the 2024 Games, India had won 31 medals in 12 Paralympic sports.
