New Delhi, January 13 (IANS). The festival of Lohri is being celebrated with great pomp on Monday. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Lohri celebrations organized at Narayana Vihar in the national capital Delhi. Apart from this, he met Union Minister G. Also participated in the Pongal celebrations organized at Kishan Reddy’s residence.
The Prime Minister wrote in the post, “Lohri has special significance for all people, especially the people of North India. It is a symbol of renewal and hope. Lohri festival is a major festival of the Sikh community. This festival is especially celebrated in Punjab and Haryana. Lohri marks the harvest of Rabi crops and the end of winter. Lohri Mata is worshiped on this day. In the evening, friends, relatives and family members gather and light a bonfire. Circumambulate around the fire. Along with this, worship is done by offering jaggery, peanuts, rewari, gajak, popcorn etc. in the fire.
The festival of Pongal is dedicated to Sun God. According to tradition, this day marks the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of the Sun’s six-month-long Uttarayan journey. To celebrate the festival, Pongal sweet dishes are prepared and first offered to the Gods and Goddesses. After that sometimes prasad is offered to the cows and then shared with the family.
