United Nations, May 1 (IANS). India’s permanent representative P. Harish in the United Nations has said that the legacy of Pope Francis will inspire people of all religions to live with peace and harmony.
Honoring the memory of Pope Francis in a special session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Harish said that his life was dedicated to peace, justice and human dignity. He recalled his deep commitment to the poor and marginalized especially, which symbolizes his unwavering faith in the service of humanity.
Paying tribute to the Asia-Pacific regional group, Harish said that Pope Francis’s death is not only for the global Catholic community, but a moment of deep sorrow for the whole world, inspired by his extraordinary life.
Harish described the Pope as a leader born once in a generation and said that his legacy would be to promote compassion, service to humanity and peace.
He said that the message of humanity, love and humility of the Pope crossed the boundaries and touched the hearts of millions. Recalling his last Easter message, Harish said that it teaches us that love can conquer hatred, light on darkness and truth lies. This message will lead us to a more stable, peaceful and rich world.
United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Guterres described Pope Francis as a symbol of faith and a man -making personality among all religions. He said that the Pope was a true friend of the United Nations and called the voice of mercy in the cruel world and peace in the war -torn world. Guterres reported that his work in the slums of Buenos Aires before was appointed as the Pope strengthened his notion that faith should be the basis of action and change.
As the Pope, he further intensified this belief as an adamant voice for social justice and equality. Both Harish and Guterres described the legacy of Pope Francis as inspiring to serve world peace and humanity, which would encourage generations to follow the path of solidarity and compassion.
