The Congress on Saturday recalled former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh in the context of some subjects related to this South American country amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Argentina.
Prime Minister Modi arrived at Buenos Aires on Friday evening (local time) on a two -day visit to Argentina and during this time he will review the ongoing cooperation between the two countries with the country’s top leadership and discuss the increase in bilateral partnership in major areas.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post on ‘X’, “Today is in Argentina. Three countries have gone, two countries are yet to go. Argentina directly means Diego Armando Maradona and Lionel Messi for Indian citizens. But there are also three deep relations. ”
He said, “Rabindranath Tagore visited Argentina in November 1924 at the invitation of Victoria Ocompo, a prominent litterateur Victoria. Tagore’s compositions were already very famous … Tagore’s collection of 52 poems, called Purbi – was published exactly a hundred years ago which was dedicated to ‘Vijaya’. He gave this name to Ocompo. ‘
The Congress General Secretary mentioned that in September 1968, Indira Gandhi met Ocompo at Buenos Aires and gave him the ‘Doctor of Literature’ honorary degree of Vishwa-Bharati University, Tagore.
He said, “Jose Louis Borges was a 20th -century Argentina and Spanish literature veterans. When he was seven years old in 1906, Borges read Sir Edwin Arnold’s ‘The Light of Asia’ and this inspired him to read and learn more about Buddha’s life. The influence of Buddha is reflected in the short stories, essays, poems and lectures of Borges. 10 years before the death in 1986, Borges ‘book’ QSL Budismo ‘(what Buddhism is) was published which shows his lifetime attraction towards Buddha.’
According to Ramesh, Raul Prebish was particularly a very influential economist in the 1950s and 1960s. He helped in establishing the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, an organization that acquired its place in world economic history as UNCTAD.
He said that Dr. Manmohan Singh worked in UNCTAD in New York from January 1966 to May 1969 and during this time he also has a cute picture with his two daughters.
Ramesh mentioned that the second session of UNCTAD was held in New Delhi during January-March 1968 and for the first time a developing country hosted a major UN event.
He said that ‘Global South’ is another word which is now being used a lot by Prime Minister Modi and Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, it was also promoted by UNCTAD, although it was first used by British banker Oliver Franks in 1960.
