Record jump in sales of electric vehicles due to 'PM E-Drive Scheme'

New Delhi, November 8 (IANS). The use of electric vehicles is increasing rapidly in the country. EVs are being promoted under the PM e-Drive scheme of the Central Government. Government figures show that due to this scheme being run in the country, there has been a huge jump in the sales of EVs.

Through initiatives like Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) and PM e-Drive schemes, electric two-wheeler sales are expected to increase to 5,71,411 units in 2024-25. During the same period, sales of electric three-wheelers including e-rickshaws and e-karts reached 1,164 units, while sales of electric three-wheelers in the L5 category reached 71,501 units.

The objective of this scheme of the Central Government is to encourage 24.79 lakh electric two-wheelers. However, only electric two-wheelers equipped with advanced batteries have been included in this. Commercially registered and privately owned electric two-wheelers can avail the benefits of this scheme.

This scheme has been brought to promote about 3.2 lakh electric three-wheelers, which also includes registered e-rickshaws or e-karts and L5 category vehicles. The scheme has been implemented from 1 October to 31 March 2026.

According to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the aim of this scheme is to accelerate the adoption of EVs. Apart from this, the government is also focusing on developing the necessary charging infrastructure. With this scheme, efforts are being made to improve air quality by reducing environmental impacts related to transportation. This scheme is playing an important role in making India self-reliant.
