West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday described the woman doctor of the murder of Medical College and Hospital as her ‘sister’ and expressed deep condolences to the victim’s parents.
He also demanded severe punishment to those responsible for the crime.
Addressing a special gathering of senior and junior doctors and medical students at Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium, Banerjee highlighted the efforts of his government to ensure justice and insisted on introducing the Aparajita Bill in which a provision to give death sentence to the culprits of rape Is.
Banerjee said, “I express my condolences to the family of the sister killed in the hospital. We demand a proper punishment in this matter.”
He said, “I also took to the streets to protest against this incident. Our government had passed the Aparajita Bill, but it is still pending (with the President).”
On August 9 last year, a 31 -year -old junior doctor was murdered at a government hospital in Kolkata after raping her, causing resentment throughout the country.
The Aparajita Women and Child Rights Bill (West Bengal Criminal Law and Amendment) Bill, 2024 was unanimously passed by the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The bill provides for the death penalty for the culprits of rape, if the victim dies as a result of their crime or goes into a unconscious state.
He said, “I assign my brothers to protect our sisters and stop such incidents in future. Today, there is no gender inequality, which is a very positive development. The government will definitely do its work, but I believe that you (brother) can play an active role in this matter. “
Earlier this month, many MPs of Trinamool Congress met President Draupadi Murmu and discussed the pending bill, which Governor C.V. Anand Bose sent the President’s Office.
