New York, 22 February (IANS). A new Jersey man who attacked a knife several times on a lecture stage in New York on a lecture stage was convicted of killing and attacking a knife.
According to media reports, 27 -year -old Hadi Matar may now face more than 30 years of jail sentence.
Rushdie suffered serious injuries in the August 2022 attack. His liver was damaged, one eye light kept going, his hand was paralyzed because the nerve of the hand was damaged.
The jury on Friday convicted Matar after two weeks hearing at the Chautaqwa County Court in Western New York State near the attack.
Jury also found Matar guilty of an attack on interviewer Henry Rees. He was present on the stage with the author. The Rise’s head suffered a minor injury during the attack.
The date of the sentence of Matar has been fixed on 23 April.
77 -year -old Rushdie testified that he was on stage in the historic Chautaqwa Institution, when he saw a man running towards him.
Recalling the incident, he said that he was stunned to see the eyes of the attacker, “who was black and looked very cruel.” At first he thought that he had been punched, but later realized that he was stabbed – a total of 15 times – and his eyes, cheeks, neck, chest, torso and thigh were wounds.
The attack took place more than 35 years after Rushdie’s controversial novel, ‘The Satanic Verses’ was published for the first time.
Inspired by the life of Prophet Muhammad, this novel created resentment among some Muslims, who considered its content to be blasphemy. After being published in 1988, this book was banned in some countries.
Rushdie faced threats of countless deaths.
The controversy related to ‘The Satanic Verses’ had a significant impact on Bhurajiti. In 1989, Iran’s supreme leader Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, ordering Muslims to kill Rushdie. After this, Rushdi had to stay underground for years. However, in later years, Iran’s attitude towards this fatwa continued.
In recent years, the author said that he believes that threats against him have come down.
In an interview given to New York Post from Jail in 2022, Matar praised Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini for calling for Rushdie’s death.
Regarding the author, he said, “I don’t think he is a very good person. He is a person who has attacked Islam.”
Matar also said that only a few pages of ‘The Satanic Verses’ have been read.
Born in a fairview of New Jersey, a Lebanese parents’ house, Matar has also been accused in a separate federal case for helping Hizbullah, a terrorist group in Lebanon.
Hizbullah has been declared a terrorist organization by Western countries, Israel, Gulf Arabs and Arabs League.
