Tehran, October 12 (IANS). Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has confirmed the death of senior commander Abbas Nilforoushan, saying that the body has been recovered. Nilforoushan was killed in an Israeli airstrike last month during an alleged meeting with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
The IRGC said on Sepah News on Friday that Nilforushan’s body had been recovered after sustained efforts by the search team, Xinhua news agency reported.
The IRGC expressed condolences over the “martyrdom of the illustrious general”. Also indicated that his mortal remains will be brought to Iran. However, nothing has been clarified regarding when.
Let us tell you that Nilforushan was killed in an Israeli attack on 27 September. Israel then carried out a massive target attack on Hezbollah’s headquarters in Dahiyah, a southern suburb of Beirut. During this attack, along with Nasrallah, many big leaders of Hezbollah were also killed. A meeting was going on between Nilforoushan and Nasrallah at the time of the attack.
It is noteworthy that on October 1, the IRGC fired about 180 missiles at strategic locations in Israel.
Iran had described the attack as revenge for Israel’s killings of Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh, Nasrallah and Nilforoushan. It said in a statement that this was retaliation for US-backed Israel’s increasing “malign actions” in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories.
