Poila Boshikh is a symbol of the beginning of the Bengali calendar year and is celebrated by the Bengali community in various parts of India and abroad. The word ‘polia’ means first, and ‘Boshikh’ is the first month of the lunar-vaul Bengali calendar. Today, the community celebrates the beginning of the year 1432.
According to Bengali Sakbdi, the first day of the year is considered to be the most auspicious.
‘Poila Boshikh’ is celebrated by Bengalis worldwide, whether they are in any geographical location, but the occasion has special significance for Bengalis in Bengali speaking areas of India including Bangladesh and West Bengal, Tripura and Assam.
In the celebration of ‘Noboborsho’ (New Year), houses are cleaned and they are decorated to welcome Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. The main gate is decorated with alpana, which is a painting made from a mixture of water with ground rice and flour.
On the new year, people wear new clothes and pray in temples and seek blessings from God. Traditional Bengali cuisine is also prepared at home and restaurants, especially in Kolkata, serve authentic Bengali dishes that provide delicious dishes.
Shopkeepers start the day by worshiping Lakshmi-Narayan and Ganesh, so that prosperity can be wished in the coming year. They start new business accounts in the name of God. According to tradition, priests make a sign of swastika with vermilion on the account of the traders, so that the business has good luck.
