The Karnataka government has taken a big step to curb fake and wrong news on social media. Under this, the government has prepared strict laws on social media to prevent fake news and misinformation. The name of this new proposed law is Karnataka misinformation and fake news (prevention) Bill, 2025. It will be presented at the next cabinet meeting soon.
Those who spread fake news on social media will be curbed
If an internet media user is found guilty of spreading fake news, he can be imprisoned up to seven years and a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh or both.
The draft will be placed before the cabinet in the next meeting
The draft of Karnataka misinformation and fake news (prohibition) Bill, 2025 is likely to be placed before the cabinet in the next meeting. According to the draft bill, the state government will ensure a complete ban on fake news on the Internet media platforms.
Public safety and harmful misinformation for fair elections
Any person inside or outside Karnataka who gives wrong information to the people of the state, who is harmful to public health, public safety, public peace or independent and fair elections, will face imprisonment and fine.
State government will now stop fake news
According to the draft bill, the state government will completely ban fake news on social media platforms. It provides for the government to set up “Regulatory Authority for fake news” on social media to fulfill the purpose of this proposed law. The authority will include the following – Kannada and Culture Minister, Information and Broadcasting, Ex -officio Chairman, one member from Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Karnataka Legislative Council, two representatives from social media platforms who will be appointed as a member set by the state government and an IAS officer who will be the secretary of the authority.
It will be considered a fake news
Fake news is considered to be a wrongly presenting someone’s statement or a combination of false and/or incorrect reports. Editing audio or video resulted in deformation of facts and/or references, or completely fabricated.
