South Korea: Acting President thanked the police for maintaining security during impeachment test

Sol, 18 April (IANS). South Korea’s acting President Han Duck-Suk on Friday organized a thanks to the police officers involved in maintaining public safety during the impeachment test of former President Yun Suk Yeol.

According to the Yonhap news agency, lunch at lunch at the official residence of Han, Li-Aan, the acting head of the National Police Agency, the acting head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Park Hyun-Su and other police officers were included, who were in the fray to stop the violent clashes between the supporter and the opposition protesters before the Constitutional Court’s impeachment decision on 4 April.

Han’s office said, “Our police officers fully performed their duties in a very delicate and important time for the country. I hope you will remain in favor of people and play their role as police officers who make the Republic of Korea safe.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense said on Friday that heads of the 707th Special Mission Group of the South Korean Army and six other military officers have been placed on mandatory leave on 3 December due to their alleged involvement in implementing martial law.

Seven officers include Colonel Kim Hyun-Taay, head of the 707th special mission group of the army. According to the ministry, Brigadier General Lee Song-Hune, Commander of First Special Force Brigade and Major General Park Hen-Sura, heads of the Ministry’s Criminal Investigation Command. All of them have been accused of involvement in the unsuccessful martial law attempt. Of these, the park has been removed from its duties, while the rest have been dismissed from their positions.

The latest decision has maintained the affected officers as military workers. This can enable the army to take disciplinary action in case of being found guilty in court.

The ministry had earlier placed the major commanders on compulsory leave, as he was prosecuted for his alleged involvement in an unsuccessful martial law attempt. These include former martial law commander Park Un-Su-Su-Su.
