Sol, 4 June (IANS). South Korean President Lee J-Mayang on Wednesday rejected the proposal of the resignation of the cabinet members, except for the Park Sung-J, to ensure continuity in state affairs.
Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Li Joo-Ho worked as the acting President. He spoke of resigning the cabinet with the collective intention of the cabinet during a phone conversation with the new President on the first day of his tenure. However, President Lee accepted the resignation of the park only.
President’s spokesperson Kong You-Jung said in a briefing, “President Lee decided to reject the proposal for the resignation made by the members of the cabinet, except the Minister Park, which stressed continuity in matters of governance.”
According to a report by the Yonhap news agency, Lee took charge after a premature election to choose the successor of former President Union Suk Yeol, who was overthrown due to unsuccessful attempts by martial law in December.
Their decision reflects the need to maintain a working government, as a majority of 21 cabinet members are required to call a cabinet meeting. Given the need for parliamentary confirmation hearing, the formation of a new cabinet may take several weeks.
All the cabinet members appointed by Yu submitted their resignation to the Ministry of Personnel Management on Monday, a day before the election.
Yoon’s close aide Park was impeached for allegations related to the former President’s martial law decree, which was overturned by the Constitutional Court in April.
Meanwhile, the President nominated Kim Min-Soom, a Democratic Party (DP) representative Kim Min-Soi, one of his close confidants, who worked as a top campaign partner, who was his first personal announcement since he took over first day.
Kim is an alumni worker who became an MP four times. He played an important role in Lee’s President’s campaign.
Lee said at a press conference at the President’s Office, “Kim brings strong policy expertise, international perspective and integrated political leadership in public livelihood issues. They are the right to lead the nation in times of crisis and restore people’s economy.”
