Rajiv Gandhi was the last Congress Prime Minister to lead his party’s majority government from 1984 to 1989. On this day in 1991, he was killed by Sri Lankan terrorist organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during the election campaign in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. His son Rahul Gandhi is currently the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
