BSP chief Mayawati said on Sunday that there is a “big challenge” to establish the rule of law in front of the newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP) in Uttar Pradesh and provide relief to people of all sections of society.
His remarks came on Saturday after the 1991 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Rajiv Krishna took over as the new acting DGP of Uttar Pradesh.
In a post on X, the former Chief Minister expressed concern over the “feudal and criminal elements” in the state, resulting in caste-based and communal hatred, violence, injustice, oppression and displacement of people.
He said, “Such incidents prove that the rule of law in Uttar Pradesh is not working properly.”
He said, “In this atmosphere, there is a big challenge to establish the rule of law in front of the new chief of the UP Police to control crime and to provide proper relief to the people of the society. The state government and the people in power should also give all possible support and play an active role in ensuring the rule of law in UP.”
Mayawati emphasized that Uttar Pradesh should be the backbone of India’s progress in view of its size and importance, but it is often in the news due to law and order issues instead of emerging as a development engine.
He asked, “Is it in the interest of the people and the nation that the state is entangled in the concerns of law and order rather than contributing to India’s multidimensional development?”
