Congress chief and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday expressed doubts over the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice President and said that there was nothing right in his decision.
Talking to the media, Kharge reiterated that the government should put forward the reasons behind the resignation of Dhankar.
Mallikarjun Kharge said, “The government should answer why they resigned. I see something black in the pulses. His health is fine. He always defended the RSS and BJP. The country should know who and what is behind their resignation.”
Earlier today, Gaurav Gogoi, Congress MP and opposition Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, took a sarcasm on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on Dhankhar’s resignation, alleging that the Prime Minister’s comments have highlighted the political nature of the resignation.
In a post on X, Gogoi wrote, “The dignity of a constitutional post should remain in both the role and resignation. Prime Minister Modi’s tweet reveals the political nature of resignation.”
On Tuesday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took a sarcasm at the post of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media related to the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice President, saying that this has deepened the mystery of his sudden resignation.
Jairam Ramesh alleged that “Kisanputra” has also been deprived of “respectable farewell”.
Ramesh said on X, “Not posting any on X by Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar’s forced resignation further enhances the secret of his sudden resignation. Certainly the Prime Minister could have been a little more generous – after all, he is the highest masters of the hypocrisy. The Kisanputra is also being denied respectable farewell.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday wished Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for good health.
PM Modi said in a post on X, “Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capabilities including the Vice President of India. I wish him good health.”
Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening to “give priority to health care and follow medical advice”.
BJP MP Ghanshyam Tiwari, a member of the vice -president’s committee, informed the Rajya Sabha about the acceptance of the resignation of Dhankhar on Tuesday. Amidst the noise in the House, he said, “The Ministry of Home Affairs has informed the resignation of India’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar under Section 67A of the Constitution through its notification with immediate effect.”
Opposition leaders have expressed surprise at Dhankar’s decision and said that there are many deep reasons for their resignation. This resignation came on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament.
The Vice President is elected by a single transitional vote according to the proportional representation system by an electorate with members of both houses of Parliament. In such elections, voting is done by secret voting.
The electoral college, which selects a person for the post of Vice President, consists of all members of both houses of Parliament.
The election to fill the vacancy due to the end of the term of the Vice President is concluded before the end of the tenure. If a vacancy arises due to death, resignation, development or any other reason, then choice is held as soon as possible to fill that vacancy. In this way, the elected person is entitled to hold the post from the date of taking charge from the date of five years.
