New Delhi, September 8 (IANS). Mamata government of West Bengal suffered a major setback on Sunday. Rajya Sabha MP Jawahar Sarkar resigned from the party. He sent his resignation to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He wrote, you have honored me by electing me as an MP from West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha. Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to bring the various problems of our state to the attention of the central government. But after much thought, I have decided to resign from the post of MP and completely separate myself from politics.
He further wrote, Thank you very much for giving me the invaluable opportunity to observe and analyse political thought and process at the highest level in the country three years ago. No one enters the political arena as a candidate for any particular post at the last stage of life, at the age of 69 to 70, so I never had any ambition for any party post or anything else.
He also mentioned his active participation. He wrote, without being a direct participant in party politics, my only purpose of becoming an MP was to join the struggle to expose the autocratic and communal politics of Modi and BJP governments in Parliament. Despite being a small soldier in this struggle, I have been able to participate in many debates in Parliament, abundant evidence of which is available on Sansad TV or YouTube.
It gives me immense satisfaction to be able to clearly and strongly criticise the authoritarian, divisive, discriminatory and undemocratic actions and policies of the Modi government.
He further wrote in the letter, believe me that the root cause of the spontaneous agitation and outburst of anger that we are seeing among the common people of the state at this time is the muscle power of some favorite bureaucrats and corrupt individuals. I have never seen so much anger and complete distrust towards the government in all the years of my life. Even when the government is putting any informative or truthful statement in front of the people, people do not believe it.
I have patiently watched everyone’s reaction to the heinous incident at RG Kar Hospital last month. The punitive action that the government is taking now is delayed. Everyone believes that if a timely decision had been taken to break the gang of corrupt doctors and the high-ranking officials involved in this heinous incident had been given strict punishment immediately, the situation in the state would have become normal long ago.
I believe that the people who have joined this movement are protesting, so it would not be appropriate to stop this movement by using political names. Of course the opposition parties are trying to serve their interests through this movement, but the common students and people protesting on the streets every day are not letting these parties in. None of them like politics, they are only demanding trial and punishment.
If we analyse this movement objectively, we will find that this protest is not only in favour of ‘Abhay’ but also against the state government and the ruling party. Hence, immediate change is required, otherwise communal forces will take over this state.
