Kolkata, October 14 (IANS). The fast unto death of junior doctors over the rape and murder case of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital entered the 10th day on Monday.
An important meeting is going to be held today between the West Bengal government and various doctor associations to find a solution to this matter.
The number of junior doctors sitting on the fast unto death on the stage at Esplanade in central Kolkata has now reduced to six. Actually, the condition of Dr. Pulastya Acharya, who was on fast, had deteriorated, after which he was admitted to the hospital late on Sunday night.
Acharya was admitted to NRS Medical College and Hospital around 11 pm on Sunday night. He himself is working as a junior doctor in the same hospital. He complained of severe stomach pain and vomiting due to his continuous hunger strike.
Before Pulastya Acharya, Aniket Mahato of RG Kar, Anustup Mukhopadhyay of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital and Alok Verma of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri in Darjeeling district had deteriorated due to which they were admitted to the hospital.
An important meeting has been scheduled between the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, which will also be attended by various doctors’ associations. The meeting will be held on Monday at 12:30 pm at Swasthya Bhawan, the headquarters of the state health department located in Salt Lake, on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. The purpose of this meeting is to find a solution to the ongoing deadlock on this issue.
Meanwhile, doctors associated with various private hospitals have partially stopped work in their respective hospitals from 6 am on Monday. Doctors will remain off work till 6 am on Wednesday. During this period, only emergency medical services will be available in these private hospitals.
