Violence continues since May 2023
Violence over reservation has been going on between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur since May 3, 2023. According to government figures, 226 people have died so far in the Manipur violence, while more than 1100 people have been injured. More than 65 thousand people have left their homes.
Why did violence erupt?
The Meitei community demands that they should also be given the status of a tribal. The community filed a petition in the Manipur High Court for this. The Meitei community argues that Manipur was merged with India in 1949. Before this, they had the status of a tribe. After this, the High Court recommended to the state government that Meitei should be included in the Scheduled Tribe. The Kukis were angry with this decision of the High Court and violence broke out in the state. The Naga and Kuki communities are against giving reservation to the Meitei. Out of 60 MLAs of Manipur, 40 are from the Meitei community, while 20 are from the tribal community. So far, only two CMs have been from the tribal community.
