New Delhi, Sep 4 (IANS) Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday administered the oath of office to the newly elected members as Rajya Sabha MPs at the Parliament House.
Those who took oath as Rajya Sabha MPs include Congress leader and senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi and BJP’s Kiran Chaudhary. Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi has been elected to the Rajya Sabha from Telangana. The Vice President administered the oath to him as a Rajya Sabha member on Wednesday.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar also administered the oath to BJP MP Rameshwar Teli as an elected member of Rajya Sabha in Parliament House. BJP’s Kiran Chaudhary and George Kurien were also sworn in as elected members of Rajya Sabha. On Wednesday, Rajya Sabha Chairman also administered the oath to Maharashtra MP Dhairyasheel Mohan Patil as an elected member of Rajya Sabha in Parliament House.
Kiran Chaudhary, who took oath as Rajya Sabha MP on Wednesday, is from Haryana. She recently became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Earlier, she was an MLA from Tosham assembly constituency in Bhiwani, Haryana. Before joining BJP, she was a member of the Congress. She has been an MLA five times and her father-in-law Bansi Lal has been the Chief Minister of Haryana.
He was one of the most influential leaders of Haryana. Kiran Chaudhary’s daughter Shruti Chaudhary has been a Congress Lok Sabha MP from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh. However, now she too has joined the BJP. Renowned lawyer and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi has also entered the Rajya Sabha. MPs have been elected on a total of 12 seats of the Rajya Sabha. Of these, 9 are from the Bharatiya Janata Party, 2 from its allies and 1 from the Congress.
With the arrival of Abhishek Manu Singhvi in Rajya Sabha, the number of Congress MPs has increased. Abhishek Manu Singhvi has been elected unopposed from Telangana. This has further secured the post of Leader of Opposition that Congress already has in Rajya Sabha. The number of Congress in Rajya Sabha has increased to 27, while 25 seats are required to get the post of Leader of Opposition.
