India’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post. He has taken this decision citing health reasons. On Monday evening, he submitted his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu, which was accepted with immediate effect. His decision has created a stir in political circles, especially when the monsoon session of Parliament has started.
Dhankhar wrote in his resignation that he wants to give priority to health as per the advice of doctors and that is why he can no longer fulfill this responsibility. He said that his health was not going well for some time and now he needs medical care.
It is noteworthy that 72 -year -old Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected as the 14th Vice President of the country on 11 August 2022. During his tenure, he was also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and he performed many important constitutional works smoothly. Prior to this, he has been the Governor of West Bengal and has also been an MP from Rajasthan.
The sudden resignation of Dhankhar may affect the proceedings of Parliament, as the Vice President plays an important role as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Till the new Vice President is appointed, his responsibilities can be interimly fulfilled or senior members of Parliament will preside over proceedings.
According to sources, Jagdeep Dhankhar was struggling with health problems for the last few months. Recently he got dizzy during a public event, after which he was immediately rushed to the hospital. Since then his health was stable, but doctors advised him to rest and stay away from active political responsibilities.
After his resignation, the process of election of the new Vice President will start. Under Article 67 (B) of the Constitution of India, the Vice President can resign from his post and this resignation is submitted to the President. The Election Commission may issue a notification in this regard in the next few days.
