New Delhi, September 4 (IANS). Preparations for the assembly elections in Haryana are in full swing. For some days, there has been speculation that wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia will contest the assembly elections. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia met opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. After this, speculations are now being made that the tickets of both the wrestlers may be confirmed.
In fact, the reason behind the speculation of contesting elections on a Congress ticket is believed to be that the then President of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was the reason behind the protest of Indian wrestlers going on since the year 2023. The wrestlers had protested for a long time accusing him of sexual harassment. Since then, the displeasure of the wrestlers with the BJP was clearly visible.
Vinesh Phogat had expressed her support to the farmers on the completion of 200 days of the Kisan Andolan last Saturday. She had reached Shambhu and Khanauri border. During this, Vinesh was also asked whether she would contest the elections? To this, the wrestler replied that she does not know about politics, but fully supports the farmers.
Speculations about Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia joining the Congress gained further momentum when both of them met Rahul Gandhi. Congress is going to announce the names of its candidates in Haryana in a day or two.
At the same time, this meeting of wrestlers before the release of the list of candidates is further strengthening the indication that wrestlers Phogat and Punia can contest the Haryana Assembly elections as Congress candidates.
On August 27, 2024, at an event in Jind, Haryana, Vinesh Phogat said that there is pressure on her to join politics. However, she also said that she would consult her elders about this. Vinesh had said that when her mind is stable and clear, then she will think about what to do next.
