The Congress’s Andhra Pradesh unit chief YS Sharmila Reddy on Wednesday condemned the Waqf Amendment Bill, calling it an attempt to weaken the religious freedom given to Muslims under the Constitution.
Reddy described the Waqf Amendment Bill as a ‘conspiracy’ to suppress minorities and a violation of constitutional values.
The President of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) claimed that the bill is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s agenda to alleged Muslim sentiments. He described it as a ‘black day’ for India and a means of provoking hate religiously.
Sharmila Reddy said in a post on ‘X’, “The provisions of the Waqf Amendment Bill allow government officials to monitor the documents required for Waqf properties and 300 -year -old properties, which is extremely worrying. The condition that persons have to follow Islamic practices for five years before obtaining the land of Waqf.
The state Congress president said that this bill not only disrespects the religious sentiments of Muslims, but also allows the government to control Waqf properties and give them to Modi’s colleagues.
Sharmila condemned the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the people condemning the support of the Waqf Amendment Bill, calling it ’embarrassing’.
He criticized Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s ‘hypocrisy’ and also mentioned his contradictory stance on Waqf properties.
