The Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. 288 votes were cast in favor of this bill and 232 votes in protest. After a long and hot debate, the government passed it, while the opposition has warned to go to court, calling it unconstitutional. Opposition parties termed this bill as dangerous for the Muslim community and called it anti -constitution.
Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee termed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 as “unconstitutional” and said that the bill would be challenged. Banerjee told reporters, “This is an unconstitutional bill. The bill will be challenged. The bill is dangerous for the Muslim community. They (BJP) will have to pay the price to pass this bill.”
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said, “The bill was passed by a very small margin and there was a difference of only 56 votes. We put all the points that India wanted to keep. We are unhappy with the results. We will continue to fight to protect the constitution and protect the rights of minority institutions.”
Congress MP and JPC member Imran Masood said, “This is a black day. It is an attack on our rights. Both Muslim community and Waqf are going to be harmed. This day will be recorded in history as a black day. We will go to court and fight against this bill.”
TMC MP Mahua Moitra said, “There is only a difference of fifty votes here and you can understand how unpopular and against the mandate this bill. It is only because of the party whip and two colleagues that they have been able to pass it hard. Are.”
Azad Samaj Party-Kanshi Ram, Chandrashekhar Azad said, “We will continue our fight against the bill and take to the streets as we did during the protest of the farmers. We will continue our fight until the government takes back the bill, as they withdrew the bill of the farmers. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill is against the Constitution and the Muslims.”
Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad said, “We have constantly opposed this bill and the intention and purpose of the government is not good. They want to grab the property of the Waqf Board. This bill is against the Constitution.”
RLP (National Democratic Party) president Hanuman Beniwal said, “We had opposed the bill. The members of the opposition were not allowed to speak in the JPC. Hindus and Muslims unitedly fought the freedom struggle of the country. The bill is not right. They want to confuse the public.”
Independent MP from Purnia Pappu Yadav said, “Just because they have a number, they are ignoring the constitution. Do they have a single Muslim MP? Do they give tickets to a single Muslim? They want to distract attention from real issues. The country will not accept it and give them a befitting reply.”
Samajwadi Party MP Zia ur Rehman Burke said, “We opposed the bill. The public will not forgive this history and way of passing the bill. If you target a particular community, the country will not develop. Will knock. “
The Lok Sabha passed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 after a marathon and hot debate, during which the members of the Bharatiya Janata Party strongly opposed the law, while the BJP and its allies supported it strongly, saying it would bring transparency and increase the efficiency of Waqf boards.
The Muslim Waqf (Relations) Bill, 2024 has also been passed in the Lok Sabha. The bill was passed after the amendments made by the opposition members were rejected. The House sat for more than midnight to pass the bill.
After Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju responded to the debate, Speaker Om Birla announced that the House is taking the item No. 12 -Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 for the House’s decision. He said that the question is whether the bill should be taken for consideration and then he said that the lobby should be cleaned.
Later he declared the result of division division. He said, “Subject to the amendment, yes 288, no 232. The majority is in favor of the proposal.”
In the India alliance, the parties decided to oppose the bill and their members voted accordingly. He also pressurized some amendments to vote. An amendment was rejected, in favor of 231 members and 238 members voted in the opposition.
The amended Bill has been brought after the government included the recommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee, which had investigated the bill submitted in August last year.
Responding to the debate, Rijiju said that the opposition parties were criticized for calling the Waqf Amendment Bill a ‘unconstitutional’. Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the law related to Waqf property has been in existence for decades and it has not been canceled by the courts and such words should not be used lightly.
The debate in the Lok Sabha lasted for about 12 hours. Rijiju said that after the bill is passed, the poor people of the Muslim community will thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The House remained sitting for more than midnight to pass the bill.
He said, “Crores of poor Muslims will thank Prime Minister Modi for the passage of this bill.”
The bill provides for amending the 1995 Act. The purpose of this bill is to improve the administration and management of Waqf properties in India. It aims to remove the shortcomings of the previous Act and increase the efficiency of Waqf boards, improve the registration process and increase the role of technology in the management of Waqf records.
