What problem is left now in India becoming a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council?

New Delhi, September 28 (IANS). French President Emmanuel Macron, while addressing the 79th meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, has recommended giving India a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.

In his address, he appealed to make the G-4 (group of four countries seeking permanent seats in the UN Security Council) countries which include India, Brazil and Japan as permanent members of the Security Council.

Apart from this, Russia has been in favor of India’s permanent representation in the Security Council since India’s independence. After this, with the advent of the 21st century, as India’s foreign policy assertiveness increased, Britain and America also became in favor of India’s permanent representation in the United Nations. Apart from this, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres had also termed the Security Council as ‘outdated’ in a statement after new countries were not allowed entry into the Security Council and the limited role of the UN in many wars.

In such a situation, the question arises that when almost all the countries are in favor of giving permanent membership to India, then where does the problem lie?

Answering this question, political analyst Arvind Jayatilak believes that the answer to this question of India is China and America. He says, “Even though China now considers India as a threat to its dominance in the South China Sea and the Indo-Pacific region, America is also responsible to a great extent for this problem of India. At present, China is trying to get a veto on India. To stop it, he vetoes it in the Security Council. Or when he has no answer left, he starts harping on giving veto to Pakistan also. It is important to understand this matter separately from China’s angle.

He further says that China is a staunch opponent of India, but America has now agreed to give India a permanent seat in the Security Council, this was not always the situation. Because India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was a socialist democracy, we were closer to the then Soviet Union. Because of which America was against us. As we have also seen in the India-Pakistan war of 1971. This is the reason why America not only opposed India everywhere but also used all its allies against India. This is the reason why the anti-India environment created by America still exists. In the same sequence, Britain also opposed India’s permanent seat. However, now it remains to be seen that when America has come on our side, how long will China and its allies like Pakistan be able to stop India’s growing dominance.
