White T Shirt Movement: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched the ‘white T-shirt movement’, claiming that economic inequality is increasing in the country as the Narendra Modi government is ‘busy in enriching a few select capitalists’.
Announcing his campaign by tweeting, Rahul Gandhi said that today the Modi government has turned its back on the poor and working class and has completely left them to their fate. The government’s entire focus is on enriching only a select few capitalists. Because of this, inequality is continuously increasing and the condition of the workers who water the country with their blood and sweat is getting worse. They are forced to face various types of injustice and atrocities. In such a situation, it is the responsibility of all of us to come together and raise our voice strongly to provide them justice and rights. With this thinking, we are starting the #WhiteTshirtMovement. I appeal to my young and working class colleagues to participate enthusiastically in this movement. What is the ‘White T-Shirt Movement’?
(1.) According to the campaign’s website, the white T-shirt ‘isn’t just a piece of clothing’; It symbolizes the five guiding principles of the campaign: compassion, unity, non-violence, equality and progress for all.
(2.) The website said these values ’echo the spirit of India’s 8000-year-old civilization, which is based on harmony and diversity.’
(3.) Furthermore, it states that growing inequalities rooted in income, caste and religion demand ‘action beyond ideology’.
(4.) The website said the white T-shirt is a call for a ‘just and unified India’ and honors the spirit of Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra and its outcome, the Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra.
(5.) It said the T-shirts would ‘echo’ the goals of both the ‘yatras’ – bridging the divide and making India a ‘united’ and ‘equal’ nation.
Why white t-shirt?
Like the iconic ‘Nehru jacket’ of his great-grandfather, first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the white T-shirt has become synonymous with Rahul Gandhi. Perhaps this was the reason why it was chosen as the symbol of the movement.
On his 54th birthday in June 2024, the former Congress chief said the white T-shirt is “a symbol of transparency, solidity and simplicity.”
