New Delhi, September 6 (IANS). When the long speculation in politics reaches its final point and takes the form of reality, then silence prevails in the political corridors. Such silence prevailed on Friday after Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia joined the Congress. Finally, both the wrestlers put an end to the discussion going on for many days and took refuge in the Congress amid the election fever of Haryana. On this occasion, Vinesh told the reason for joining the Congress.
Both of them were given Congress membership in the presence of party general secretary KC Venugopal, Pawan Khera and other leaders. Venugopal said that we are proud of both the wrestlers. We assure them that we were with them yesterday and will remain with them in the future too.
Meanwhile, Vinesh Phogat also told the whole country the reason for joining Congress. She said, “When she and other female wrestlers raised their voice against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, it was unfortunate that BJP did not consider it necessary to support us. If anyone supported us in this difficult time, it was only Congress, so we decided to join Congress.”
She said, “I am extremely pained to say that when we were being dragged in front of the whole country, BJP did not support us. At such a time, only Congress came forward. I assure that I will live up to the expectations of the top leadership of the party. I am extremely proud to say today that today I am a part of a party that raises its voice for women from the streets to the Parliament. With joining the Congress, I am going to start a new innings today. One thing I want to make clear is that our fight was going on and will continue in the future too. Neither were we ever afraid nor will we ever be afraid. If anyone thinks that Vinesh Phogat will get scared, then I want to tell him that we have never been among those who get scared. We have learned to face every situation boldly and will continue to do so in the future too.”
After holding his hand, Vinesh said, “If I wanted, I could have quit wrestling at Jantar Mantar itself, but I wanted to put an end to the lie spread by the IT cell, in which it was being said that our career was over, so we played the Nationals, but maybe God had some other plans.”
It is worth noting that Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have joined the Congress at a time when the dates for the assembly elections in Haryana have been announced. Elections will be held in Haryana in a single phase and the results will be announced on October 8. BJP has released the list of candidates. It includes the names of 67 candidates. The list of candidates has not been released by the Congress yet.
