Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government said on Wednesday that a total of 144 fishermen of the state are currently lodged in Pakistan jails and 22 of them have been arrested in the last two years. State Fisheries Minister Raghavji Patel gave this information in response to the question asked by Congress Legislature Party leader Amit Chavda during the Question Hour in the Assembly. “Out of 144 fishermen, a total of 22 fishermen were caught by Pakistan in two years,” he said. Of these, in 2023, nine and 13 fishermen were caught in 2024. ”

432 Indian fishermen released in last 2 years

Pakistan Maritime Security Agency often detains Gujarat fishermen and accuses them of entering the Pakistani water area by crossing the International Maritime Line (IMBL) in the Arabian Sea. The minister also told the assembly that Pakistan has released 432 Indian fishermen in the last two years while 144 fishermen were in custody till January 2025.

Congress MLA raised the question

Responding to a related question raised by Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar, the minister said that till December 2024, 1,173 boats of India were also occupied by Pakistan and none of them have been returned to the country in the last two years. Patel said that the state government has presented necessary documents and evidence of their nationality to the Ministry of Home Affairs in the last two years for the release of these fishermen.
