Two people, including Marxist Communist Party (CPI-M) leader Kalatan Dasgupta, have been arrested for conspiring to attack protesting junior doctors. Police gave this information on Saturday. Both were arrested after Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh released an audio clip of a phone call. Ghosh alleged that a conspiracy was being hatched to attack the junior doctors protesting outside the Health Bhavan in Salt Lake to defame the Mamata Banerjee government in the state. The police had registered a suo motu case in connection with the audio clip released on Friday. The second person arrested in the case has been identified as Sanjeev Das. Das was arrested from Haltu in South Kolkata on Friday night while Dasgupta was arrested from the protest site outside the Health Bhavan in Sector 5.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Anish Sarkar said, “The conspiracy was probably hatched on the day the junior doctor visited the state secretariat Nabanna. The audio clip has been confirmed after technical analysis.” He claimed that Das has already admitted that the voice in the clip is his. Efforts are being made to identify the names Bappa, Saheb and Dadu, who have been named in the clip. He said, “The two arrested persons will be produced in court today and the police will seek their custody for 14 days.”
Called it a conspiracy to divert attention from the protests
Senior CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty claimed that the arrests were made to divert attention from the ongoing protests over the rape and murder of the trainee doctor. He demanded a CBI probe into the case. He said it should be seen how deep the conspiracy was. After the arrests, Trinamool leader Ghosh claimed that the clip was leaked by those who were plotting to attack the doctors.
What are the demands of the protesting doctors
Since Tuesday, doctors have been camping outside the Health Bhawan, the headquarters of the state health department, with several demands. Their demands include better security in government hospitals and removal of top officials in the case of rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital last month. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met the protesting doctors at the Health Bhawan in Salt Lake. She said, ‘I myself have come forward through student movement, I have also struggled a lot in my life, I understand your struggle. I am not worried about my position. It rained all night yesterday, you were sitting here protesting, I was worried all night. I will study your demands after listening to them. I do not run the government alone, I will definitely find a solution by studying your demands with senior officials.’
