Three railway employees have been arrested in Gujarat’s Surat district for allegedly tampering with the track. The accused carried out the incident after alerting authorities about the sabotage attempt, in order to take credit for averting the danger. Police superintendent Hotesh Joisar said the three accused are trackmen in the railway’s maintenance department. They have been identified as Subhash Poddar (39), Manish Mistry (28) and Shubham Jaiswal (26), who are trackmen in the railway’s maintenance department.
It is said that during inspection between Kosamba and Kim stations, railway employee Subhash Poddar and others had informed the railway administration at 5:30 am on Saturday that some miscreants were removing elastic clips and two fishplates from the track and placing them on another track so that they could derail the train. After this information, the ears of the railway officials were alerted. In a hurry, a case was registered against unknown suspects in Kim police station on the charge of criminal conspiracy and investigation was started.
Superintendent of Police Hotesh Joysar said- We found that the three had sent a video of the track tampering to their senior officers during patrolling at night so that the authorities could be alerted. Railway officials told the police that a train had passed through this route just before the information of track tampering was detected by the three employees. Investigation revealed that the time gap between the detection of track tampering and the passing of the train was very less. It was not possible to remove the clips and plates in such a short time.
After this, the mobile phones of the three were examined. Investigation revealed that the videos of tampering with the tracks were shot at different times between 2:56 am and 4:57 am. The suspect Manish Mistry had also deleted the pictures taken. This proved that the pictures and videos were taken much before the authorities were called to report the vandalism at around 5:30 am. After this, the three accused were interrogated rigorously in which they confessed to the crime.
The SP said that he did this so that he would be honoured and put on night duty. Due to night duty, he would get a chance to spend time with his family during the day. Subhash Poddar had come up with this idea because his night duty was about to end. If the accused are to be believed, all three would get leave the next day for every night duty. That is why the accused wanted their night duty to continue.
