The health of many students deteriorated after having dinner in a government college hostel in Latur city of Maharashtra. Fifty girl students were admitted to hospital due to suspected food poisoning. Officials gave this information on Sunday. 324 girl students live in this hostel of Puranmal Lahoti Government Polytechnic. Officials said that at around 7 pm on Saturday evening, the girl students ate rice, chapati, okra vegetable and drank lentil soup. By 8.30 pm, many of them felt uneasy and some girl students started vomiting. The students said that a lizard was found in the food. However, the investigation of the entire matter is still going on.
On receiving such information from the hostel, the college principal reached the spot. He informed Dr. Uday Mohite, Dean of Vilasrao Deshmukh Government Medical College and Hospital in Latur. The victimized girl students were immediately taken to the hospital by ambulance. Dr. Mohite said that till midnight about 50 girl students were admitted to the hospital for treatment. 20 of them were discharged from the hospital by 3 am. 30 other girl students are being treated in the hospital. The condition of none of them is serious.
Food sample investigation continues
College principal VD Nitnaavare said, ‘After receiving the news that some girl students of the hostel were ill, we immediately reached the spot. All the victimized girl students were admitted to the hospital for treatment. Extensive health checks were conducted to ensure that there was no risk to any student. There is nothing to worry about. He said that Shivajinagar police has been informed about the incident. Police reached the spot and authorities collected food samples. The cause of food poisoning will be ascertained after receiving the sample report. After receiving information about the incident, Latur Lok Sabha member Shivaji Kalge reached the hospital to inquire about the well being of the girl students. The Congress MP also contacted Latur District Magistrate Varsha Thakur Ghuge and demanded action against those responsible for the incident.
