Gujarat Police has also registered a case of theft against senior journalist Mahesh Langa, who is jailed in the GST (Goods and Services Tax) scam. This case has been registered after some documents of Gujarat Maritime Board were recovered from him. Giving information about this, an official said that this is the second FIR registered against him after his arrest by Ahmedabad Crime Branch in the GST scam earlier this month.
Langa, who works with a leading newspaper in Gujarat, was sent to judicial custody last week after his remand in the GST case ended. District Superintendent of Police Ravi Teja Vasamsetty said on Wednesday, ‘The second FIR was registered at Sector 7 police station of Gandhinagar city on Tuesday night.’ He also said that people will not be able to see this FIR online, because it has been kept in the sensitive category.
Langa and an unidentified employee of the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) have been booked under relevant sections of the Prevention of Theft and Corruption Act, sources said. The SP said, ‘During the investigation, Ahmedabad Police had recovered some official documents of GMB from Langa’s possession. Since these documents are government property, the Board officials contacted us and lodged a complaint against Langa along with an unidentified employee of GMB (who gave him the documents).’
Meanwhile, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested five more people in connection with the ongoing investigation of the GST fraud case. Information about this was given by the Crime Branch by issuing a release. Along with this, after registering the FIR earlier this month, the crime branch has so far arrested 14 people including Langa.
The Crime Branch in its release said that after receiving a complaint from the Central GST on the alleged scam of running a fake firm with the intention of deceiving the government by availing fake input tax credit through fraudulent transactions, the Crime Branch on October 7 arrested several persons and FIR was registered against the institutions.
