A head constable was stabbed by a man with a criminal background when he asked him not to use foul language during a Ganesh idol immersion procession in Bharuch district of Gujarat, police said on Wednesday. The injured head constable was rushed to a hospital by his colleagues, an official said. He is out of danger now, they said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Kushal Ojha said the accused, Mahesh Vasava, was caught from the spot in Ankleshwar town and arrested for allegedly attacking and injuring a public servant on duty. He said the incident took place on Tuesday night when Head Constable Lalit Purohit and his colleagues were managing traffic in the Bharuch Naka area.
Ojha said, ‘The head constable saw that the accused Vasava was shouting and abusing people for no reason. When the priest asked Vasava to behave properly, he got furious and started fighting with the head constable. He took out a knife and stabbed the priest in the hand and stomach, injuring him seriously. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where his condition is currently out of danger.’
The police officer said that preliminary investigation revealed that Vasava had also attacked a policeman in Ankleshwar in 2016, following which the court had issued a non-bailable warrant against him.
