A Kolkata Police volunteer was arrested on Saturday for allegedly entering the protest area on a motorcycle and injuring a student of Rabindra Bharati University. A senior official said that the area where the accused entered was barricaded by the police and students were protesting against the rape and murder of a doctor.
He said that the incident took place at around 2 am when a volunteer of Sinthi police station entered the barricaded area where people were protesting demanding justice for the deceased doctor. He said that the volunteer hit a protesting student. In this regard, a protester said that the accused was in an inebriated state when the incident took place on BT Road at Sinthi crossing near the university in the northern part of Kolkata.
The protesting students blocked the main road for nearly five hours alleging that a traffic sergeant helped the volunteer escape from the spot. They demanded punitive action against the culprit. A senior police officer told, “An FIR has been lodged in the case and the volunteer has been arrested. We have removed him from the post and necessary legal action has been taken.”
Officials said the barricades on BT Road were removed around 8.30 am, after which vehicular movement was restored. Students of Rabindra Bharati University had taken permission to hold the protest.
