After almost three decades, forced marriage has once again become a trend in Bihar. In 2024, there is an increase in the number of arranged marriages after many years. However, there is no government data regarding such matter. But based on conversations with people, inputs received and a survey conducted by a private voluntary organization in Darbhanga, it has been learned that in 2024, the highest number of forced marriages have taken place after three decades. In Pakdaua marriage, a boy of marriageable age is abducted and then forcibly gets married through intimidation.
The latest case is related to Bhramarpur village of Bhagalpur district. A youth working in a government job in Delhi-NCR was forcibly married in Delhi itself. When the family members lodged an objection regarding this matter, a compromise was later reached. The most surprising thing in this is that this marriage was solemnized in the father’s side by some close relatives who caught hold of the boy.
A young man from Kazhi village in Banmankhi sub-division of Purnia district was also forcibly taken to Supaul district and got married two days before Durga Puja. The matter regarding this matter escalated so much that the matter reached the police station. The marriage of a clerk working in a government bank, resident of Shankarpur village of Araria district, was forcefully arranged in Begusarai district. The young man had gone to Begusarai with one of his friends for his brother’s engagement. Most of the cases of forced marriage are seen in the north-eastern districts of Bihar only.
The first case came in 1980
The history of Pakdaua marriage in Bihar starts from the 1980s onwards. After the 80s, the practice of forced marriage was highest in Darbhanga, Madhubani and Begusarai districts of Mithilanchal, Bihar. Cases of forced marriage were quite common from the 1980s to the 1990s. Its numbers declined after the 90s. After Corona, its number increased significantly.
66 catch marriages took place in one year
Mrigendra Mishra of Navgachia says that most of the Pakdaua marriages become successful because there are no mismatched marriages in it. In 90 percent of the cases, intra-caste marriages are conducted. The prevalence of such marriages has increased more after the Corona period. According to the survey data conducted by an organization for making a web series, 66 captive marriages have been conducted so far in the year 2024 in 18 districts of East Bihar, Kosi-Seemanchal and Mithilanchal.
