Ahmedabad: Union Home Minister Amit Shah celebrated the festival with residents of Shanti Niketan Society in Memnagar area of Ahmedabad on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel also participated in the event, due to which a lot of enthusiasm was seen among the local people. During this time Shanti Niketan Society was decorated with rangolis. Here women and children warmly welcomed Union Home Minister Amit Shah. During this period, cultural dances were also presented along with traditional drums.

On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with his wife Sonalben Shah took part in kite flying on the rooftop. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel greeted everyone on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. The celebration saw the presence of several dignitaries including Ahmedabad Mayor Pratibha Jain, local party leaders, councilors and AMC officials.

Let us tell you that Makar Sankranti is celebrated every year on 14 January. It marks the first day of the Sun’s entry into the sign of Capricorn (Makara), signaling the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of longer days. This festival is an important occasion for Hindus all over India. People pray to Lord Surya (Sun God) on this day. It is known by different names in different regions, such as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam and Maghi in Punjab.
People fly kites today
In Gujarat it is known as Uttarayan. In Gujarat this day is celebrated with kite flying. As part of the International Kite Flying Festival, people gather on rooftops across the state and fly kites while enjoying the clear skies. Apart from flying kites, people enjoy traditional dishes like chikki (made of sesame seeds and peanuts) and undhiyu (a dish made of winter vegetables).
