Assam News: The Assam government has taken a big decision on the leave of assembly employees. The government has decided to end the two-hour Juma break given to the employees of the state assembly. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma himself informed about this decision on the social media platform X. The state government took this decision on the last day of the assembly session.
The two-hour Juma break has been ended
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X on Friday that ‘By eliminating the 2-hour Juma break, the Assam Assembly has prioritized productivity and removed another sign of colonial burden. This practice was started by Syed Saadullah of the Muslim League in 1937. Gratitude to Speaker Biswajit Daimary and our MLAs for this historic decision.
The CM said that since the formation of the Assam Assembly, the assembly used to be adjourned at 11 am on Fridays so that Muslim members could go for namaz. The assembly used to resume its proceedings after lunch after the Muslim members returned from namaz. On all other days, the House used to conduct its proceedings without any adjournment for religious purposes. However, this will not happen now and the House will function smoothly throughout the day.
In order to increase the productivity of the Assam Legislative Assembly and to remove the colonial burden from the state, the rule of adjourning the House for 2 hours every Friday for Jumme was abolished.
This practice was started by Syed Saadullah of the Muslim League in 1937.

‘This decision is a milestone’
On the government’s decision to end the Jumma break, Assam minister Piyush Hazarika tweeted that ‘This decision is a milestone to regain true secularism in Assam. The Assam Assembly today ended the practice of a 2-hour break for Jumma Namaaz every Friday. This practice was started by Saadullah’s Muslim League government in colonial Assam.
Now the action will start from this time
Let us tell you that there is no provision for giving a break for offering Namaaz in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and other state assemblies. However, there was a provision in Assam Assembly, which was abolished today. The Assembly Speaker has decided to end this British era rule. From Monday to Thursday, the time of Assam Assembly used to start at 9:30 am, but on Friday the House used to start at 9 am, so that a two-hour break could be given for Namaaz. In such a situation, now the proceedings of the Assembly will start at 9:30 am every day.
