Former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh and senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel has written a letter to CJI DY Chandrachud. He has demanded the CJI to order a high-level judicial inquiry into the functioning of central and state investigative agencies in the state. Bhupesh Baghel has also complained in the letter to the Chief Justice that a conspiracy is being hatched against him to link him to various crimes in the state.
Bhupesh Baghel has said in a letter written on September 21 that he performed his duties as the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh with full honesty, integrity and dignity. The ED has been investigating a case of alleged illegal recovery in coal transportation in Chhattisgarh for the last four years. After the BJP came to power, a case has also been registered by the state’s ACB/EOW.
The accused arrested by ED have also been kept in jail by ACB/EOW in a new case. One of them is a businessman named Suryakant Tiwari. Suryakant Tiwari has filed an application before the Sessions Judge/Special PMLA Court on September 9 and said that on September 8, ACB/EOW Director IPS Amresh Kumar Mishra visited the jail and asked him to record a statement stating my (Bhupesh Baghel) involvement in the coal case.
Baghel wrote- Tiwari has said in his application that IPS Amresh Kumar Mishra has threatened him with dire consequences if he does not take my name. Suryakant Tiwari is currently in judicial custody. Permission for this meeting was neither taken from the concerned court nor from any competent authority. Sir, the meeting of IPS Amresh Kumar Mishra with Tiwari is against the principles of law. This is a well-planned conspiracy.
Baghel further said that the aim of this conspiracy is to link my name with crime. A senior IPS officer is hatching a serious conspiracy by committing such a crime. Earlier also, attempts have been made to link my name with some crime through investigation agencies. The people who were called for questioning in the coal case were tortured by the ED and pressure was put on them to give a statement of my involvement.
Baghel has said that my government initiated action against the illegal online betting business operating in the name of Mahadev App. 72 cases were registered in this matter. Hundreds of bank accounts were sealed and crores of rupees were seized. My own government issued a look-out notice against the Mahadev app operators and appealed to the central government that the accused have fled abroad, so the Center should take action to bring them to India.
The Congress leader further said that the central government did not take any action in this case and gave it a political colour. In this case, the ED selectively raided people close to him. The recent incident that happened with Suryakant Tiwari in Raipur Central Jail and the incidents that happened before, all of them were aimed at defaming me and gaining political mileage.
It is noteworthy that the ED is investigating the coal levy and Mahadev app scams. After the BJP came to power, the state’s Anti-Corruption Bureau i.e. ACB and Economic Offenses Wing i.e. EOW also registered a separate case in the alleged scams. Bhupesh Baghel’s name is also included among the 18 people named as accused in the EOW FIR. The state government last month recommended a CBI inquiry into the cases registered regarding the Mahadev online betting app.
