The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested Ashish Pandey in the corruption case against Sandeep Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College. It is understood that Ashish Pandey is a youth leader of Trinamool Congress. This information was provided by officers. Pandey is said to be close to Ghosh and was under the probe agency’s scanner, and was questioned by the CBI on September 30, officials said.
Ghosh was arrested on September 2 in a corruption case. The agency later detained him in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata-based medical college. In its FIR registered on the directions of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI has named Ghosh and three Kolkata-based private entities. During the operation, the premises of all the units named in the FIR were searched.
On August 9, the body of the trainee doctor was recovered from the four-floor seminar hall of the emergency department of RG Kar Hospital. The same night, a civic volunteer of the Calcutta Police was arrested on charges of rape and murder. Later, on the orders of Calcutta High Court, CBI took over the investigation of the case. Then they took the arrested civic volunteer into custody.
With the permission of the court, polygraph test of the accused was also conducted. Later, CBI arrested Sandeep and the then OC of Tala police station Abhijeet Mandal on charges of tampering the evidence in this case. In view of this case, Ghosh has been accused of financial corruption going on in the hospital for more than three years. The state government had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on August 16 to investigate him.
