Big relief for the people of rain-hit Gujarat
Ahmedabad: Cyclone Asana, which formed during the day off Gujarat’s Kutch coast, has moved towards Oman in the Arabian Sea without causing any major impact on the region, officials said on Friday evening. Kutch District Magistrate Amit Arora said that as a precautionary measure, the local administration has shifted around 3,500 people to safer places and those living in huts and kutcha houses have been asked to take shelter in other buildings.
Cyclone moves towards Oman
Arora said, “Since the cyclone has already moved out to sea and is headed towards Oman, it has had a minor impact on the coast. Except for some rain and strong winds, there was no impact here. There is no immediate report of any injuries, deaths or collapse of any major structure.”
The Meteorological Department gave this information
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a release issued on Friday evening that the deep depression over the Kutch coast and adjoining areas of Pakistan has “intensified into cyclonic storm Asna and is centered about 190 km west-northwest of Bhuj at 11:30 am. The IMD had earlier said that the deep depression over the region could turn into a cyclonic storm by Friday morning. After this, the authorities took steps to evacuate people to safe places.
CM gave these orders
Following the IMD warning, Kutch District Magistrate Arora issued a video message asking people living in Abdasa, Mandvi and Lakhpat talukas to leave their huts and kutcha houses and take shelter in a school or other buildings. Following the IMD warning, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reached the State Emergency Operations Centre in Gandhinagar on Thursday night and spoke to Arora about the district administration’s preparedness through video conference, an official release said.
It said that if the deep depression turns into a cyclone, it will be named ‘Asna’, a name suggested by Pakistan. It is a rare occurrence that a deep depression over land has turned into a cyclonic storm in the sea. Not only this, the formation of a cyclone in the Arabian Sea in August is also rare. The IMD had warned that “during this period, the sea condition will be rough, high waves will rise and the wind speed can reach 75 kmph along the Gujarat coast.
