Manipur new government: Political activities in Manipur have intensified. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Thokchom Radheshyam Singh met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Wednesday and claimed that 44 MLAs are ready to form a new government. Radheshyam Singh along with nine other MLAs reached Raj Bhavan and informed the Governor about the consent of the MLAs.
Radheshyam Singh said that 44 MLAs are ready to form the government as per the expectations of the public. We have also discussed the options of solution on this issue with the Governor. He also added that the governor has heard his words seriously and will take necessary steps in the public interest.
Final decision Center has to take: Radheshyam
In response to the question asked on the claim of forming the government, Radheshyam Singh clarified that the final decision will be taken by the BJP’s central leadership. He said that however, to say that we are ready, the government in itself is a sign of formation. Assembly Speaker Satyavrat has held personal and collective discussion with 44 MLAs and no one has opposed the formation of the new government. He expressed concern over the current situation in Manipur and said that the previous term was affected due to Kovid, while the current term has fallen to ethnic conflicts.
Manipur under President’s rule
Significantly, after the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, President’s rule is in force in Manipur since February. Biren Singh resigned amid the government’s criticism in dealing with the caste struggle between Meeti and Cookie-Communities. This struggle started in May 2023 and peace in the state could not be restored.
Assembly status
There are a total of 60 seats in the Manipur Assembly, out of which 59 are currently present. One seat is vacant by the death of an MLA. The BJP -led coalition has 44 MLAs 32 Meeti, three Manipuri Muslims and nine Naga. The Congress has five MLAs, which are from the Meeti community. The remaining 10 MLAs are from the Kuki community, of which seven are on BJP ticket, two cookie from People’s Alliance and one independent.
Former Chief Minister Biren Singh also met Governor
A day before this, former Chief Minister N Biren Singh also met the Governor. He discussed the current state of the state and demanded the invitation to the protesters to negotiate in view of the Gwalatabi incident. There were large-scale protests in the Imphal Valley regarding this incident.
