There is huge anger in the Christian community over the remarks made by BJP MLA from Jashpur, Chhattisgarh Raimuni Bhagat about Jesus Christ. People of the community lodged complaints against the MLA in all the police stations of Jashpur, demanding an FIR against him. Also warned to take to the streets and protest if action is not taken.

People from the Christian community in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district on Thursday formed a human chain of about 130 km long demanding registration of an FIR against a BJP MLA for his alleged objectionable remarks about Jesus Christ. State President of Christian Adivasi Mahasabha, Anil Kumar Kispotta said that the protesters held each other’s hands and formed a human chain of about 130 km long from Pathalgaon to Lodam village and protested.

Kispotta said the protests were carried out peacefully. During this, a demand was made to register an FIR against Jashpur BJP MLA Raimuni Bhagat for his objectionable remarks about Jesus Christ.

Bhagat had allegedly made remarks about Jesus Christ and religious conversion in the local dialect during an event at Dhengani village under Asta police station area of the district. Later, a video of his statement went viral on social media, following which people from the Christian community lodged complaints against the MLA in all the police stations of Jashpur, demanding registration of an FIR against him.

Kispotta said that there is a lot of anger among Christians regarding Bhagat’s statement. Despite complaining in this regard, the police has not taken any action yet, so we decided to hold a peaceful protest by forming a human chain. He warned that even after this, if no action is taken against the MLA, the people of the community will not shy away from protesting like road jam.

When asked about the comment, Bhagat said over phone that those forming the human chain should first show their valid certificate that they are Christians. Bhagat said that before 1905 there was not a single Christian family in Jashpur. Later many families were converted to Christianity through fraud. There is a legal process for conversion under which an application has to be made to the authority. Describing the human chain protest as a flop show, he said that the protestors should first show their valid certificates regarding conversion to Christianity.
