Soldiers helping during the floods in Gujarat
Cyclonic storm ‘Asna’, which formed during the day on the Kutch coast of Gujarat, has moved towards Oman in the Arabian Sea without causing any major impact on the area. Kutch District Magistrate Amit Arora said that as a precautionary measure, the local administration has shifted about 3,500 people to safer places and people living in huts and kutcha houses have been asked to take shelter in other buildings. This storm has been named Asna by Pakistan. Suggestions have been taken from every country to decide the names of the storms and their names are decided on that basis. The name Asna has been suggested by Pakistan.
Arora said, “Since the cyclone has already moved out to sea and is heading towards Oman, it has had a minor impact on the coast. Except for some rain and strong winds, there was no impact here. There is no immediate report of any injuries, deaths or collapse of any major structure.”
The Meteorological Department had issued a warning
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a release issued on Friday evening that the deep depression over the Kutch coast and adjoining areas of Pakistan has “intensified into cyclonic storm Asana and lay centered about 190 km west-northwest of Bhuj at 11:30 am.” The IMD had earlier said that the deep depression over the region could turn into a cyclonic storm by Friday morning. After this, the authorities took steps to evacuate people to safe places.
Pakistan decided the name
Following the IMD warning, Kutch District Magistrate Arora issued a video message asking people living in Abdasa, Mandvi and Lakhpat talukas to leave their huts and kutcha houses and take shelter in a school or other buildings. Following the IMD warning, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reached the State Emergency Operations Centre in Gandhinagar on Thursday night and spoke to Arora about the district administration’s preparedness through video conference, an official release said. It said that if the deep depression turns into a cyclone, it would be named ‘Asna’, a name suggested by Pakistan.
It is rare for a storm to form over the Arabian Sea in August
It is a rare event that a deep depression formed on land has turned into a cyclonic storm in the sea. Not only this, the formation of a cyclone in the Arabian Sea in August is also rare. The IMD had warned that “during this period the sea condition will be bad, high waves will rise and the wind speed can reach 75 kmph on the Gujarat coast.” Since 1891, only four times a storm has occurred in the Arabian Sea in the month of August. This storm started from Rajasthan and strengthened after going into the Arabian Sea. Now it is moving towards Oman. However, it is expected to weaken before reaching there. (Input-PTI Bhasha)
