West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose has again criticized the Mamata government over the way it has handled the ongoing protests following the alleged rape and murder of a trainee lady doctor at Kolkata’s government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month. On Thursday, Governor Bose said that there is law in the state, but it is not being followed properly. He also alleged that a section of the police has become criminal and political.
According to news agency ANI, Governor Bose said, “There should be a case against those who do wrong. They must be punished. People should feel that they can expect justice from the government, but this does not seem to be happening. Today the situation in Bengal is that there is a law but it is not being followed properly or some people are being given protection under the law.”
He said that a section of the police is corrupt, while a section has been criminalised and a section has been politicised. Bose also said that he met the victim’s parents, who told him some things which are very heart-rending. The governor said that he has raised these things in his meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah.
Make anti-rape law like the one made in Bengal; why such demand in BJP ruled state
Bose said, “The victim’s parents have told me some things which are heartbreaking. They have also given it to me in writing which I have raised with the Home Minister. Within two days we saw action being taken. We understand their feelings. They want justice in this case. The entire Bengali society wants justice. There will be justice. There should be justice.”
Bose remarked that the West Bengal government’s attitude was “going from bad to worse.” He stressed that the recent mass protests were due to the public’s lack of faith in the system. “What I see today in West Bengal, especially in the administration, is going from bad to worse. They should understand that two wrong things will remain wrong even if they are contradictory. The government has to take action and take people into confidence. Punishment must be given,” he said.

Bose said that the people of Bengal no longer feel that they can expect justice from the government and this sentiment is reflected in the widespread protests. Apart from this, the Governor also warned the Mamata Banerjee-led government of the state not to test the patience of the people. He bluntly said, “This is the same place where people have participated in social movements with great enthusiasm. I am sure that the voice of the people is the voice of God. People want action, no excuse should be made for action.” Targeting the state government, he said, “Do not test the patience of the people.”
